Antique figural copper trade sign.
This piece takes the form of an antique mortar and pestle, one of the most important tools used by practitioners of medicine for centuries. This tool was used in the production of foods, spices, herb, and extracts that needed to be ground and/or mixed into powder. Due to the lack of literacy at the time, figural trade signs were important to apothecaries and pharmacies so people who could not read would still know where to get their medications.
This sign is constructed from individually welded copper plates and features multicolor glass cabochons fitted with interior lights to allow the illumination to filter through, creating an eye-catching and dazzling accent piece. The sign has been affixed to a period-appropriate cast iron flange mount for displaying the piece on a wall.
Corded electric.
Exhibits minor signs of wear including patination on the copper. Glass pieces appear to be free from chips and cracks.
16" dia x 28" H with a 26" L flange
